Johnson Middle School (Phase 1 Modernization)

Washington, DC

In October 2009, the DC Office of Public Education and Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) identified fourteen schools in the District of Columbia under the FY 2010 Elementary Schools program for complete Phased Modernization as prescribed by the OPEFM 2008 Master Facilities Plan (MFP). Patrick directed the design team in providing Bridging Architectural Services to develop a Full Schematic Design for the complete phased modernization of the 182,500 square-foot Johnson Middle School, so as to better inform and properly facilitate the subsequent design-build process that was employed to construct its Phase 1 Modernization in 2010. From December 2009 to August 2010, architectural design services were provided on the Johnson Middle School Bridging Architect Sand Phase I Classroom Modernization projects. With the demands of a tight schedule and a project delivery that began as Bridging Architect services to modernize the entire 182,500 square foot facility but then reverted to a design-build project delivery method for the Phase I Classroom Modernization, the design team performed effectively and efficiently, designing the modernization of the classroom and learning environment spaces contained in the existing 34,000 SF classroom zone, which involved replacing the HVAC system from individual fan coil units to forced central air. This was accomplished within the established budget that was set by OPEFM.
