Maury Elementary School (Phase 1 Modernization)

Washington, DC

Working off Bridging Architect documents that produced Schematic Designs for the complete modernization of this existing, 46,800 square foot school, a design-build delivery approach was implemented by OPEFM (now DC DGS) to complete the detailed design and construction of the school's Phase 1 Modernization. This involved modernizing the Academic classroom areas, where students spend the majority of their time. However, the specific needs of this school required that its Phase 1 scope expand into hallways, bathrooms, and the lobby and entrances of the school. Beginning work in April 2011, the design team conducted an evaluation of the Bridging Architect documents and coordinated with JCo/Rand Construction and OPEFM on identifying the critical components of the Phase 1 Modernization, and assisted the value engineering process that resulted from budget short-fall and reconciliation. Utilizing our extensive design experience, we fine-tuned those items without compromising the Phase 1 Modernization criteria, submitting permit drawings in May 2011. From the start of construction in June 2011, Patrick provided construction administration services, responded to RFIs, reviewed submittals and conducted site visits to review progress. His knowledge and experience with the OPEFM Phased Modernization Program criteria was instrumental in assisting the design-build leader with quickly resolving conflicts during construction without compromising the Phase 1 design intent.
