University of the District of Columbia School of Law

Washington, DC

Identified as a programmatic need as a result of its Campus Master Plan update, The UDC David A. Clarke School of Law was relocated into an existing campus facility. Design services called for the modernization of the existing six story building on the campus for the expanding law program that will reach 650 students. The design creates a new modernized instructional building that adds faculty and administrative spaces, classrooms with tiered seating, numerous seminar rooms and a Moot Court room. In addition, the Clinical Program will be strengthened by the addition of collaborative group study areas, interview rooms, library space and a conference center with state-of-the-art audiovisual and communications technology. The design approach for a re-invigorated facility created a building environment that one would most likely expect to inhabit as a student or member of the law school staff or faculty. Amongst the myriad of issues involved in creating a new environment within an existing faculty, is the added challenge of delivering this renovation project to UDC while being currently occupied by the law school. Working with the UDC Facilities Department, Patrick led the design team efforts and forwarded a phased-occupied renovation schedule during which time personnel were swung within the facility.
